About Melissa

Melissa fell in love with writing when she held a white baby alligator in her hands at the Audubon Zoo while researching an article for a New Orleans magazine. Since then, she has indulged her curiosity about the world through science writing, exploring everything from slime molds to potential life on Mars. Most recently, she has finished a memoir about living with her mother as she died. She also has written for Science Magazine, Science News for Kids, The Santa Cruz Sentinel, The Northwest Arkansas Times (now the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette) and other publications.

In addition to writing, Melissa loves the outdoors and spends as much time as possible hiking the trails of the Pacific Northwest. She became a Yoga Alliance-certified yoga teacher in 2025, and enjoys sharing her practice, with others in studios and outside.

Melissa speaks French fluently, along with some rusty Russian and Spanish, and practices her linguistic skills by traveling aborad.

She lives with her long-haired,tortoiseshell cat, Ash, in Seattle, Washington, where, when not busy with the activities listed above, she spends her time indulging in walking, dancing, knitting, and photographing slugs and fungi.
